I RECENTLY attended a meeting as part of the 'Say No to Mereham' campaign and learned that you wanted to hear from anyone with experience of the 1947 floods.

I was a young lad at the time and can clearly remember standing on the steps of my father's barn in Mitchell's Lane in Wilburton, looking toward Cambridge and seeing what looked like the ocean not very far away.

My father took me along Twentypence Road as far as the water. I remember paddling in the water in my brand new Wellington boots. This was very close to what is now Sharp's Farm.

I also remember standing on the hill in Haddenham, looking toward Earith and seeing the houses and buildings with just their roofs above the water.

Rest assured that, if Mother Nature decides, this will happen again.
