WITH reference to your article in last week's newspaper regarding the site at the end of High Street Passage/ Market Street, I was under the impression, from previous editions of the paper, that the derelict building would be taken down and replaced with something in keeping with surrounding buildings straight away.

Now we have a bigger eyesore than before, restricting access down High Street Passage to High Street.

Ely planners state they are happy with progress but don't state that the owner has three years to rebuild and make the site presentable. Have locals got to put up with this inconvenience for so long?

People who have never been to Ely and are visiting do not realise that there is a good selection of shops in High Street Passage and are not venturing round this eyesore. I have great sympathy with the businesses which have a hard enough job of keeping in business.

Hopefully this matter can be resolved sooner rather than later as Ely cannot afford to lose any more shops from the town centre.
