A much-loved story was brought to life over the Bank Holiday weekend.

St Andrew’s Church Witchford held a Wind in the Willows themed Flower Festival.

Organised by Caroline Hammill, the event raked in more than £995 in donations and on the raffle from attendees over the three days.

Caroline Hammill said: “What a huge success the Wind in the Willows Flower Festival was.

"I’ve finally caught my breath a little and I am utterly thrilled to announce that [the visitors and villagers’] generosity meant over £995 was given in donations and on the raffle over the three days.

"I have a few more bills to pay and when it’s all totted up, some of the profits will go towards next year’s flower festival, with the remainder going to the upkeep of our beautiful historic church.

"Thank you again to all the volunteers who helped in any way and to all of the visitors who made it the weekend.

The festival saw hundreds of visitors participating in an array of activities.

Caroline supplied large amounts of cakes and biscuits daily, and boards were detailing the story of the Wind in the Willows, with colourful displays of the characters interspersed with a variety of beautiful flowers in the church.

Visitors also enjoyed a children's art competition, a raffle, and jigsaw puzzles.

Music from the Wind in the Willows musical provided a backdrop to the event.

The event's success was no small feat, with the next Flower Festival already set for May 3, 4, and 5 next year.

The churchwarden, Rosemary Westwell, said: “It was splendid to see so many people, including many families, who visited the church over the weekend to admire Caroline and her team’s wonderful display.

"A lot of work had gone into making this weekend such a success and this is much appreciated. We look forward to next year’s Flower Festival.”
