The departing music director of Peterborough Cathedral will conduct his last major concert at the stunning venue on Saturday, March 29.

Robert Quinney will conduct Bach’s St Matthew Passion, which he describes as “undoubtedly one of the greatest masterpieces of Western music”.

Quinney, who is leaving to become an organist and tutorial fellow at New College, Oxford, said: “It is a deeply dramatic and moving account of the Passion of Christ and runs the whole gamut of musical styles from the simple, unadorned chorales, to virtuoso displays by the solo instrumentalists and singers.”

The piece will be performed by Peterborough Choral Society, Peterborough Cathedral Choirs and Peterborough Festival Chorus, with The Saraband Consort, a London based baroque orchestra using period instruments.

The soloists will be evangelist Simon Wall, soprano Cecilia Osmond, mezzo-soprano Frances Bourne, tenor Mark Dobell and baritone Nicholas Morris.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £20, £15 & £12 (Discounts for under-18s) and are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/pcma, Stamford Arts Centre at 01780 763203 and Peterborough Visitor Destination Centre at 01733 452336.
