The Ely City Group of Amnesty International is showing the Oscar nominated best picture film ‘Hidden Figures’ on Saturday October 7 in The Lecture Theatre, The Old Palace, Ely.

The film, based on the book of the same name, tells the true story of three African-American women who played key roles, as mathematicians and engineers, in helping the United States win the space race in the face of racial discrimination which was still rife in the USA at that time.

One of the women who features, Katherine Johnson, is still alive aged 99 and NASA recently dedicated its newest building to her. She calculated the trajectories for Alan Shepard’s first space flight in 1961 and the following year verified the computer calculations for John Glenn’s orbital flight. Both incidents are shown in the film.

The film has been described as funny, heart-warming and inspirational.

Tickets cost £6 and are available from Burrows Bookshop and on the door. Doors open at 3.30pm.

The film has a PG certificate and lasts 127 minutes.
