Archant

With a totally new cast for its fourth film, the message to Diary of a Wimpy Kid die hard fans is this.

Don’t be disheartened by the new cast.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (PG) has the same fast paced, laugh out loud fun that everyone has come to know and love.

Set on a summer road trip, the family antics include winning a piglet, losing all their luggage, going viral with a You Tube clip and plenty of toilet humour thrown in for good measure.

The Rodrick replacement, however, has sent teenage girls into a flurry of disappointment. The casting has even sparked a Twitter campaign #notmyrodrick.

A tough call for new actor, Charlie Wright, who takes over the role from Devon Bostick.

Pin up poster boy Bostick was always going to be a hard act to follow as he clearly made the walls of many a teenager’s bedroom, but at the age of 25, is too old to be feasible.

So, despite an odd choice in Wright, the rest of the casting is spot on for this totally “new” family.

Wright cannot be faulted for his superb acting, to create the older sibling, who gleefully picks on kid brother Greg, so if you can pack away the let-down, this film delivers the same brilliance of family fun at its finest.

For 2017, “cheese touch” is gone, to be replaced instead with “diaper hand”, and after a five-year break, it is a welcome return for the hapless Heffleys.

The movie has a flat-out focus of a family trying to find quality time amid iphones, laptops and ipads, riddled with good-old-fashioned slapstick, meets goofball and a large measure of ridiculous.

Highly recommended half term holiday viewing.

CAST: Jason Drucker, Charlie Wright, Owen Asztalos, Tom Everett Scott, Alicia Silverstone, Joshua Hoover.

DIRECTOR: David Bowers.

PG, 91 minutes.
