Archant

You’d never put them together but, watching Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga onscreen together, it feels like they were made to star alongside one another - and this modern day remake of A Star Is Born showcases their effortless chemistry and acting/singing skills perfectly.

The first thing that hits you is how good Cooper is at singing - and guitar playing. Equally impressive, is Lady Gaga’s talent for acting; a total contrast to her real life persona, as Ally she conveys a much shyer character.

Combine their faultless voices together, and it’s a La La Land-style tale of chasing fame whilst maintaining a relationship - but with a much darker edge.

Predictably, their paths cross when stadium-selling but ageing alcoholic and drug addict musician Jackson Maine (Cooper giving a heartfelt performance miles away from his comedic role The Hangover) stumbles across a backstreet drag bar and falls for Gaga’s tear-jerking tone as aspiring self conscious singer-songwriter Ally.

With a voice like hers she should already be a star, but because of the shape of her nose it’s never happened - even her dad remarks “sometimes the best singers don’t make it”: It’s a fitting reflection of the often-shallow music industry, where appearance seems to matter more than actual talent.

After quitting her waitress job, she takes up Jackson’s invite to join him on the road - and a life of private planes and stadium shows awaits her; visually, the sweeping shots of the Arizona desert add to the film’s beauty.

By the time their first duet is over, its impossible not to be invested in the romance and success that’s unfolding on screen; but, inevitably, it’s not going to last forever, especially when a creepy image-focused music manager gives Ally a career offer she can’t refuse. Things quickly start falling apart and jealousy - and consequently drugs - begin to take over...

Fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be seems the underlining message; but what’s most impressive is how convincingly Cooper, who also takes on the role of director, conveys Jackson’s struggle – an award-worthy delivery.

One of the best films of the year, where every step of the journey is a joy to watch, A Star Is Born comes with a poignant reminder of the darker sides of fame and fortune.
