Ely Vikings have notched up their best ever club performance by claiming the runners-up slot in the Cambridgeshire Korfball League.

The season came down to a hard-fought title-decider with defending champions Cambridge Tigers.

In front of a good crowd, Tigers – with home advantage and in pole-position – eventually ran out winners 11-7, with the sides all square at half-time.

Vikings have been scoring 20 goals a game in what has been their best season since the club was founded eight years ago - but on the night the shots just didn’t drop.

Robyn Seabright was creative in attack with excellent movement, strongly supported by Eleanor Johnson. Chris Brown was dominant at the post allowing repeat attacks for Jas Radford and Olly Watts.

A number of second half penalties allowed Tigers to pull out a three-goal lead. Jacob Dawes came on as sub in an attempt to create something different and change the game.

Jamie Smith and Ant Brolia got three goals each and Chris Brown scored one.

Martin Brown, club chairman, said: “Whilst Vikings were disappointed with the result they can be proud of the performance. With an average age of 18 the team has enormous potential for future improvements and some strong talent coming through the club.”

A man was arrested in Soham last Thursday for possession of a class A and B drugs, alongside handling stolen goods as part of East Cambridgeshire Police’s latest crack-down.
