Ely Tigers made short work of basement boys Broadland as they racked up a bonus point whitewash on Saturday.

John Dibb’s spirited side ran in six tries against their hapless opponents, who didn’t score a single point in a largely one-sided contest that just about keeps the Tigers slim promotion hopes alive.

Despite the sodden conditions, Ely were in dominant mood for the kick-off, with a quick switch to winger Charlie Coupland – who crashed over the line - starting off the scoring.

Broadland rallied and enjoyed their best spell of the match in the wake of Ely opener but didn’t have enough fire power to hurt a well-drilled Tigers defence.

Having weathered the storm, Ely scored a well-worked try courtesy of man of the match pairing of Dave Kempers and Lee Coulson. Kempers broke the line and off-loaded to Coulson to touch down for a converted try.

Before the end of the half, Joel Scott Paul slotted a penalty to bring the score to 15-0.

The Tigers continued to push the Broadland defence to its limits in the second half. The forwards forced their way down the pitch and quick pick and drive from Mitchell Kennett allowed him to dive over for an unconverted try.

Broadlands kicked back and fast hands forced the ball wide to Kempers, who stepped the opposition full back to touch down under the posts for another converted try.

Ely secured a valuable bonus point when an inside ball to Joel Scott Paul gave him space to sprint down the line and score.

Before the end of the match, Tim Evans added his name on the scoreboard when he evaded multiple tackles on the five metre and touched down.

Despite the win - and the bonus point - Ely remain nine points behind second place Newmarket with six league games remaining this season.
