The Ely Tigers were first to get on the scoreboard after a solid ten minutes of possession.
Southwold conceded a penalty and Ely opted to find touch.
Nathan Brooks threw to the front of the line out to Lloyd Palmer who took his man and off loaded back to Brooks, he then darted in the corner uncontested.
Ely looked like they were on top until a looping pass was intercepted by the opposition defence who ran through for a converted try.
Ely were eager to fight to get back into the game. Fifteen minutes in and Southwold were penalised for offside, the Tigers took it quickly and were held up on the five-metre line.
Adam Featherstone picked and went down the blindside, crashing over for an unconverted try. Southwold pulled themselves ahead through penalties. In the last minutes of the game it was 16-13 to the opposition, with one man in the bin due to repeated infringements.
The Tigers gained a penalty for another offside offence and rather than go for the three points, Ely went for the jugular and kicked for the corner.
Brooks threw a perfect line-out and the ball came down for the Tigers. Mitchell Kennett sprinted round the fringe and crashed over for a converted try. Final score; 20-16 to the Tigers.
Man of the match was Matt McCarthy.
