East Hockey League Division 2NW
Ely City 2
Ely let slip a two-goal lead as they were held by Panthers at Downham Road on Saturday.
Ali Chapman’s side looked in good shape going in two goals clear at half-time but a second-half rally from the visitors saw them roar back into contention and take a share of the points.
The draw sees Ely settle into third place in the league following last week’s season-opening win at Broadland.
Norfolk-based Panthers started the game strongly and dominated play as Ely struggled to find their feet. The hosts managed to regroup however, and made the most of two presentable early chances to move into the lead.
Perennial goal-scorer Jo Rainer added to her tally this season by getting on the end of Jessica Haw’s cross to open the scoring.
Ely’s second goal came via Sarah Sutton’s flick to the top of the D, which was controlled and fired low towards goal by Narissa Gipp and swept in at the far post by Holly Radcliffe.
The visitors redoubled their efforts after the break and piled the pressure on the Ely defence, which eventually told. Two quick-fire goals for Panthers put them back on level terms and with all the momentum going into the latter stages of the match.
The visitors pushed hard late on but Ely held firm to secure a point. Man of the match was given to Holly Radcliffe for her forward play.
Ely will be back in action again on Saturday as they host Norwich City II. The Ely ladies second and third teams also kick off their seasons on Saturday, as they take on eachother at Downham Road in Division 4NW.
The club is keen to recruit new players to its ranks and is inviting anyone interested to attend training on Tuesdays at 8pm at Ely Outdoor Sports Associaiton, in Downham Road.
