European Tour golfer David Howell played nine holes with two lucky raffle winners at Ely City Golf Club on Saturday.
Howell, who has twice been part of Europe’s Ryder Cup side, gave an exhibition of top-class golf as he shot an eight-under-par round of 64.
The reigning Alfred Dunhill Links champion, 38, attended after being invited to play by his father-in-law Fred Doughty, a member at the club since 1978.
He was accompanied for the first nine holes by Ely’s resident pro Andrew George, the club captain David Woods and Luke Ryan.
For the second half of his round, the English ace was joined by the club’s assistant professional Paul Geen and members Ian Macrae and Ian Bridgeman.
Howell said: “I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was made to feel very welcome. The course was in very good condition.”
The highlight of his round was a brilliant eagle at the par-5 fourth hole, which was Howell’s 13th of the day. Having found the fairway, he drilled a 3-wood 240 yards into wind to within 12 feet of the flag before holing a left-to-right breaking putt.
After his round, Howell posed for pictures with members and signed autographs.
George said: “David was great company and was so complimentary to his playing partners whenever they hit a good shot. He put everyone at ease and it was a lot of fun having him visit us.”
