Robins boss Ben Lawrence said Saturday’s last-gasp defeat at Walsham was a heart-breaker for his side.

With the hosts reduced to 10 men, Ely were pushing for a winner in the final stages of the match only to concede a bizarre own goal with seconds left, robbing them of a point.

The result sees them drop back into the bottom three and with a difficult match against play-off hopefuls Haverhill Rovers to come on Saturday.

Lawrence said: “It was heart-breaking to be honest because I thought we had done enough to deserve to win the game. To lose the match in that way was cruel, it was a cruel goal to concede.

“We had to go for the win, especially with the situation we are in and with Walsham down to 10 men. They never looked like scoring until that point.

“We’ve got a big game against Haverhill to come and they are a good side this season to be fair. We are down to the bare bones in defence but we’ve got to give it a go for the win.”

Trevor Newman opened the scoring for the hosts before James Seymour pulled Ely level in the last minute of the first half. Walsham were reduced to 10 men in the 75th minute and Ely piled on the pressure in the closing stages in search of a winner.

But it was the hosts who stole all three points as Seymour put through his own net amid a goalmouth scramble.
