£6,000 grant leads to launch of all-girls football team in Burwell

An all-female football team has been launched in Burwell thanks to a funding boost of £6,000.

Burwell Tigers FC have been awarded the grant from the Football Association’s Grow the Game programme.

Jack Smith, club manager of Burwell Tigers FC, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us as a club to help grow the girls’ game in the Burwell area.

“The club would like to thank the Football Foundation and Cambridgeshire FA for helping to secure a Grow the Game grant.

“We are really keen to see an increase female participation in football locally, and the grant will help us provide opportunities for this to happen.”

England women and Arsenal striker Danielle Carter said: “Playing in an all-female team from a young age was key to my development, so I am delighted that there will be more opportunities for women and girls in the local area.”

This year, grants were made available for clubs looking to create new female and disability football teams to help towards the costs of FA coaching courses, FA league affiliation costs, referees’ fees, first aid kits, football kit and equipment.
