A tale of two games for Ely City

10:23 23 April 2014

A mixed Easter weekend for Ely City saw them pick up one of their best results of the season at title-chasing Felixstowe before being hammered by Godmanchester Rovers.

On Saturday, 10-man Ely held out for a crucial point at the home of league leaders Felixstowe and Walton, a result described by joint manager Ben Lawrence as “the best result” he had seen since he took over.

But then, on Easter Monday, Ely were chasing the game against Godmanchester and left themselves open to some ruthless counter-attacking which ultimately saw them beaten 5-1.

Lawrence said: “Felixstowe was probably our best result in a funny sort of way, especially away from home. We were down to 10 men for most of the second half but when it was time to get in the trenches, the lads really dug in.

“The team was unbelievable, talk about grit and determination. It was the best result since Brady Stone and I took over.”

Adam Murray headed Ely into the lead in the first half before, early in the second period, Josh Townsend was handed a second yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Though Felixstowe were able to snatch an equaliser, Ely held firm and took a point.

On Monday, Ely were just 2-1 behind going into the final 20 minutes against Goddy when a change in tactics, in order to push for a draw, backfired and left them exposed.

But Lawrence says the scoreline didn’t tell the whole story.

He said: “To be honest it was probably a game too far for us, especially just a few days after Felixstowe, but we were right in it until late in the second half. The scoreline was not a fair reflection of the game.”

The Robins are back in action again on Saturday when they travel to Stanway Rovers in search of a win that would guarantee their Thurlow Nunn Premier Division status for another season. Kick off is 3pm.
