Members of the Ely Swimming Club got their first taste of the Olympics while competing at the aquatics centre used for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Youngsters from the Ely Swimming Club have had their first taste of the Olympic Games when competing at the first open meet of 2018 at the aquatics centre in London.

The centre was the home of the 2012 London Olympic Games and for the majority of the group it was the first time they’ve stepped foot in a 50m pool.

Ely Swimming Club competed against 17 other clubs from around the UK, collecting 32 medals in total and finishing in 9th place overall.

The team bagged three gold medals, 11 silver and 18 bronze.

A team spokesman said: “Individual highlights for the Club included Daniel Kendall, who was first boy overall and first 11 year old boy, winning three gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

“Georgia Holgate, 14th girl overall and third 10 year old girl, winning two silver and three bronze medals.

“Maximilian Veiga, seventh boy overall and third 10 year old boy, winning one silver and five bronze medals.

“William Haylett, 20th boy overall and third 15 year old, winning two silver medals.

“Other medallists were Lexi Harrison, winning three silver and two bronze, Jasmine Thompson, winning one silver and one bronze.

“Finally, with a bronze medal each, Mia Tandon, Daniel Millard, George Sporle and Gina Brewis.

“Personal best times toppled for the whole team throughout the day leaving all optimistically looking forward to the start of the Cambridgeshire County Championships next weekend.”
