Ely hockey players faced tough games

It was tough games for Ely City Hockey Club when they played their recent matches.

Ely City Ladies 1s won 4-1 at home against Horncastle 1s.

There was some great attacking play down both sides of the pitch, which Horncastle struggled to defend against.

Goals came from Hannah Brown (1), Gemma Mott (2), Rachel Carpenter (1) while player of the match went to Ali Woods.

The Ladies 2s played their toughest game of the season yet and battled to secure an 8-4 victory against Bury St Edmunds 4.

Ely started strong with seven shots on goal and one goal within the first eight minutes of the match.

However, Bury St Edmunds matched Ely attack for attack and Ely found themselves 1-2 down by half time.

The second half was a different match, Ely played with the calm fluidity that has proved so successful this season, hitting the backboard seven times.

Bury St Edmunds continued to threaten the Ely defence, scoring a further two goals on the counter attack.

Ely goals came from Xenia Marshall (2), Alex Marshall (2), Lynette Morrison (1), Sophie Rob (1), Indea Cranner (1) and Evie Flack (1). Player of the match went to Annabelle Gilbert.

Ely City Mens 1s lost 2-5 against City of Peterborough 4s.

The first half was evenly matched, Matt Samuel (1) scoring for Ely for it to be quickly returned by a goal from Peterborough.

During the second half Peterborough carved through Ely’s defence and scored a further four goals.

Tom Grimshaw did pull one back for Ely, scoring from a short corner, earning himself player of the match. .

The Men’s 3s were also unlucky away at Peterborough losing 2-3 against City of Peterborough 7s.

It was an incredibly close game, with end to end play. Ely were unlucky to concede in the last minute of the game. Both goals came from Tom Samuel.
