Soham Comrades IV beat Fulbourn V 5-1 to lift the Handicap Plate.
Comrades’ Chris Rule (17) kicked off against Fulbourn’s Dave Roitman (14) and took the first leg 31-29.
The second went to Roitman 31-27 but Rule won the next two to 29 and 26. Lito Jumilla (17) then faced Jon Chapman (14) and must have felt happy after taking the first two legs 31-29 and 31-21. However, the Chapman of old then emerged to claim the next three legs to 29, 25 and 26. Only one-all and nine legs up to 31 had been played.
Mark Coles (13) beat Ali Hands (17) in two close legs 32-30 and 31-29. Rule then beat Chapman in three straight sets despite having only a three-point advantage – but the last two sets were very close. Jumilla beat Hands three straight but every leg was won by a margin of only two points. Coles then sealed the victory with a surprisingly comfortable win over Roitman 31-22, 31-26.
In Division 1 league action, Haddenham retained their title in style by defeating Soham Comrades I 10-0 to open up a nine point lead at the top of the table with one game in hand over their nearest rivals, who have all completed their fixtures. Most of the games were won three straight, though Mark Lillyman took Liam Mohan to four sets; Sid Dunster did the same against Christian Mohan; and Alan Chambers led Liam by two sets to nil before the senior Mohan won the next three 5, 6 and 8.
