Ely’s Hollie Parker has been crowned British national champion for the mile after winning the prestigious Bupa Mile in London last weekend.
Hollie, a Year 12 pupil at King’s Ely, was presented with her trophy and medal by Olympic and World Champion athlete, Mo Farah.
This year’s race was celebrating the 60th anniversary of Roger Bannister breaking the four minute mile barrier for men, and Diane Leather becoming the first woman to break the five minute barrier for women.
Hollie was running in the British Athletics One Mile Age Group Championships on the day and, despite the atrocious weather conditions, stayed with the leading group of runners throughout the mile race, eventually forging ahead in the last 200 metres to finish first with a time of 5minutes 4seconds.
Richard Powell, head of athletics at King’s Ely, said: “This is a tremendous achievement by Hollie, who continues to develop as an outstanding athlete.”
