Steve Wells reports on Ely Tigers.

Ely Tigers opened 2024 with a trip to second in the league, Wymondham, for the first of three difficult fixtures for the Tigers.

The home side took the lead at seven minutes after a mistake from Ely proved costly, with the referee playing the advantage.

Wymondham raced forward to cross the try line but the conversion was missed. With 20 minutes on the clock, the home scored their second try of the afternoon,  with the conversion added they led 12-0

In a stop-start game, Ely were awarded a penalty, opting to kick for the points and Matt McCarthy slotted the ball through the posts,

Ely were forced to make changes as Adam Tallack went off with an injury. The game reached half-time with no further score.

The second half, saw Ely camped in the home side's half, with Wymondham able to gain ground.

Eventually they found a way into the Ely defence from a scrum, spreading the ball out from right to left before crossing the line to score.

Tigers chance came late in the half, however the home defence stood up to the test, and as Tigers conceded another penalty, which gave the home side the chance to clear.

Final score: 17-3 home win.
