The Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust is challenging all comers to abseil down Needham’s Tower, a four-storey science block at Ely College.

Volunteers will be given the chance to climb to the top of the tower, which stands in excess of 60 feet, and abseil down to the ground, all while raising money for Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The event is taking place on May 18 but the trust is encouraging as many people – aged 14 and older – to sign up and take part.

Fundraiser Jo Pearson, whose 16-year-old son Joseph is already signed up to take part, said: “I’ve been up to the top of Needham’s to have a look over and it is quite a surprise just how far down it is. I would have loved to have had a go but unfortunately I will be working on the day but I’m sure it will be a great experience.

“We have had three teachers from the college come forward and say they are interested in having a go and it is a great opportunity because the tower is being demolished to make way for new classrooms soon.”

The abseiling will be supervised on the day by professional company Xtreme Sensations and it costs £25 to register to have a go.
