Children made a big splash over the weekend as the third annual puddle jumping championships got underway at Welney’s Wildlife and Wetlands Trust.

The competition, staged at the seven wetland centres across Britain, encourages participants to jump in puddles to create the biggest splash they can.

A spokesman said: “It’s all a lot of fun and we know that children who love puddles often grow up to be adults that love the outdoors.

“So through these championships we’re gently nurturing a love that may help protect wetlands and the wildlife that depend on them for years to come.”

The Wetland and Wildlife Trust’s new children’s character, Dusty Duck, joined in the fun again and helped kids create the biggest, craziest splash possible.

Dusty was exclusively designed by the world-famous Aardman Animation studio to help celebrate WWT’s 70th anniversary by getting children closer to nature.

Everyone that finished the course received a ‘splashtastic’ sticker to acknowledge their puddle jumping skills.

Jumpers are judged on three categories of their enthusiasm, the creativity of the jump and most importantly the height of the splash.
