North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay has praised a campaigning mum after funding for a zebra crossing outside a village school was agreed.

Mr Barclay lent his support to a campaign to install a zebra crossing outside the Downham Feoffees Primary School, in Little Downham, after being approached by concerned mum and child-minder, Emma Turrell.

The MP stepped in after two previous attempts to get funding for the much-needed crossing were refused by Cambridgeshire County Council.

Mum Emma refused to give up and with Mr Barclay’s help campaigned tirelessly. Thanks to additional help from Councillor Anna Bailey and Little Downham Parish Council they managed to secure the necessary £15,000 funding for the crossing.

Work in preparation for the safety scheme is due to start in September, with actual building work starting in October. Completion is expected by the beginning of December.

Mr Barclay said: “As a dad with two young children I appreciate the importance of road safety whilst travelling to and from school.

“Whilst there will be some disruption during the building phase later this year, I hope residents will welcome the long term benefits this scheme will bring in making the road safer outside the school.”
