RAF Mildenhall’s main gate has reopened after being closed for three hours when a suspicious package was found this morning.

The 100th Security Forces Squadron personnel activated special control measures just before 8.30am after finding a suspicious package during a routine inspection, according to Lt. Col. Kevin Parker, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron commander.

According to procedures, the 100th Security Forces Squadron team along with the Ministry Guard Service initiated enhanced security measures after finding the package.

The vehicle was attempting to gain entrance onto the installation and was going through a routine search, according to a base spokesman.

The British Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit worked to make sure the area was safe.

The Main Gate (Gate 15) was closed while the investigation was carried out.
