The British Transport Police has issued advice to train-spotters after a man strayed too close to the tracks near Ely on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were called to a level crossing near the city after members of the public raised concerns for the safety of a man seen standing near the tracks.

A spokesman for the police said officers attended the scene but “checks revealed this man to be a rail enthusiast”.

In light of the incident, the force has issued fresh advice to train-spotters when trying to capture pictures of trains.

Officers say enthusiasts are welcome to take pictures for private use but say station staff should be made aware of who you are and what you are doing.

They also advise people to stay clear of the platform edge, not to trespass onto any area of the railway that is not available to passengers and not to climb on or obstruct any structure or interfere with platform equipment or signs.
