More work to protect Wisbech from flooding is to begin on February 24 as the latest phase of improvements get under way.

The latest work, costing around £350,000, is designed to maintain the retaining wall flood defence on South Brink, Nene Quay.

At the same time Cambridgeshire County Council will complete bridge repairs on the Town Bridge, carry out local highway improvements and road resurfacing.

A council spokesman said: “To enable work to be completed as quickly as possible, the Town Bridge will be closed to traffic and pedestrians for 10 weeks from March 3. “Signed diversions for walkers and drivers will be in place.”

Millions has been spent on flood defence work in Wisbech in recent years including upgrading of the retaining wall at Freedom Bridge.

The town is said to have a 1 in 200 year chance of major flooding and in recent years a considerable amount of floodwall reconstruction has been undertaken.

In 2010 work finished on a £12million Environment Agency flood prevention scheme and won the main contractors a national award.

The work entailed flood defences along four kilometres of river bank and used some 330,000 bricks with work carried out along both the South Brink and North Brink.

  • So, the Fair is here from 1-8 March, and the town bridge is closing for 10 weeks from 3rd March. Brilliant timing by the Council as usual!
