Three men and one woman were arrested today on suspicion of intent to supply drug ‘grenades’ after three children were found unconscious and taken to hospital.

Run down flats – just 500 yards from the town police station – were raided by 23 police officers where quantities of the ‘grenades’ were discovered.

A police sniffer dog, an eight-year-old cocker spaniel, was allowed in to begin helping police with their search of the premises.

The officers – from Fenland and Peterborough- had been briefed beforehand at March Police Station before travelling in convoy for the 12 mile journey to New Bell Lane, off Nene Quay.

Inspector Ian Lombardo said the raids were “our police response to information received from the public and also from partner agencies around a person in the local area who was dealing drugs to local children, and using those children to deal drugs for him”

He said: “The combination that we know, it’s a mix of many drugs. But the predominant elements we believe are MDMA, and also being cut with bleach.

“They are pressed, from what we understand, into a form of mini-grenade. We know that from social media and also intelligence.

“Children are able to go to the address and buy the drugs for as little as £5.

He said: ““People join the police force to attack criminality and to protect the most vulnerable. Some of the most vulnerable within our society are our children.

“It’s only right that the local area is safe for our children and that this activity is stopped as soon as we find out about it but also the fact that we discourage others from undertaking it.

“I’d like to think that today shows that if people come to us with information, especially around stuff like this, I take it very seriously, my team take it very seriously, and we will deal with it.

“It’s taken weeks of work and planning, and gathering the intelligence as best we can, to hopefully have a positive result today.”

Police confirmed that the three children found unconscious last month recovered after hospital treatment.

Officers remain at the scene: Inspector Lombardo is expected to provide a detailed briefing to the press later.

Specialists will now examine the ‘grenades’, thought to contain MDMA, a synthetic drug that alters mood and perception (awareness of surrounding objects and conditions).

The drug is chemically similar to both stimulants and hallucinogens, producing feelings of increased energy, pleasure, emotional warmth, and distorted sensory and time perception.

Police believe the drug in Wisbech has been mixed with bleach in a domestic bath tub before being sold to the youngsters.
