It was a case of third time lucky after a bid to build a pair of semi-detached homes at Wilburton won approval from East Cambs planners.

The council’s planning committee needed the casting vote of the chairman after a 5-5 tie over whether to allow the homes next to 8 The Firs.

The site is within the conservation area and to the rear of 38 High Street, a Grade II listed building.

Councillors were assured the applicant had overcome objections which had led to earlier refusals.

“In terms of visual amenity and heritage impacts, the height, scale, design and materials were in keeping with the existing dwellings along The Firs,” said an officer’s report.

It was considered that the proposed development would preserve the character and appearance of the conservation area. A traditional design and materials were in keeping with nearby dwellings.

It was noted that a number of concerns had been raised by Wilburton Parish Council and neighbouring occupiers regarding the impact of the proposed development and a number of representations highlighted existing parking and congestion issues along The Firs and Carpond Lane.
