Officers were called to the A142 crossing at around 10:30am this morning (Thursday May 17) after reports a HGV had stuck the barriers and caused damage.

Police closed the North level crossing for around one hour while engineers from Network Rail assessed the damage; people were advised to “avoid the area if possible”.

“Officers attended however the vehicle had not remained on scene, engineers from Network Rail also attended. Enquiries are on going in relation to this matter.”

The closure caused increased traffic congestion in the area due to the incident.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Police said: “We were called at 10.30am today with reports that the level crossing at the A142 in Ely had been damaged by a HGV.”
