Amazing support, amazing volunteers and an amazing day was how organisers summed up Sunday’s Ely Festive 5K run.

The annual event is in aid of the Arthur Rank Hospice – but it was not an event you could sign up for on the day: all places were taken by October 11.

“We’re all certainly in the Christmas spirit after a fantastic fun run,” said a hospice spokesman.

“Well done to all the runners who took part - you all looked amazing in your festive fancy dress.”

The charity said special thanks were offered to sponsors The Cambridge Building Society & Ward Gethin Archer Ely. East of England Co-op for the water donation, Cross Country Carriers Ltd for the lorry, Tesco for the mince pies, Ely Markets for use of the square “and to Feel Good Fitness for warming us all up”.

The spokesman added: “A very big thank you goes to all our amazing volunteers who without them this event would not be possible.

“See you all again in 2018.”

The run helps to support thousands of people living with a life-limiting illness across Cambridgeshire.

Stephen Mitcham, chief executive at The Cambridge Building Society, said: “We are passionate about supporting charities and community events that have real impact. “This annual festive fun run is a highlight in our charity calendar: colleagues are always keen to get involved as event assistants or volunteer marshals.”

David Snodgrass, Finance Director at Ward Gethin Archer, said: “We really enjoy hosting Ely Festive 5K from our offices on the Market Square.

“I have known friends and relatives that have benefitted Arthur Rank Hospice’s care, and I know that those running alongside me in our team felt just as happy as I do to be supporting them, and raising funds for their fantastic work.”

As well as needing to secure £7.45 million annually, Arthur Rank Hospice is additionally still striving to raise the final £2.2 million needed to reach its £10.5 million target for its new home in Shelford Bottom.

Arthur Rank Hospice said they would like to thank motorists for their patience as they cooperated with the event’s traffic management team between 10.30am and 2.00pm to ensure fun runners safety.
