Ely Hereward Rotary Club is urging runners, walkers and cyclists to sign up for its Ouse Washes Experience fund-raising event.

The event was originally scheduled to take place back in April but was postponed due to torrential rain and flooding.

But organisers are confident the elements will be kinder to them in late summer and they plan to hold it on September 21.

The event has also been remodelled and walkers as well as runners and cyclists are now able to take part.

It will start at the Wildfowl and Wetland Centre, in Welney, and will see runners and cyclists follow an 8.5km off-road track that runs from Welney to Welches Dam.

Walkers will be able to use the footpath on the bank of the Old Bedford River, and like the runners, will finish at Welches Dam.

There will be a free shuttle and a bus/bike trailer service operating throughout the event to get people back to their start point.

There are activities being arranged at RSPB Welches Dam and Manea Pit, both of which are en route and open to visitors.

Gary Gardner, Ouse Washes project leader, said: “The route is part-on and part-off road for cyclists which provides a reasonable workout.

“The off road track and path is ideal for runners and walkers, and is located in a virtually unknown part of our landscape. Do make the most of taking part and experiencing the scenery of this amazing place.”
