A Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force volunteer from Sutton has retired after 23 years.

Revd Alan Jesson joined the cadet force in 1991 as a civilian specialist instructor before his ordination as a priest in July 1992 in Ely Cathedral.

He was commissioned as a chaplain in 1992 and has served with Cambridgeshire cadets since then, not only as a chaplain but also as a St John’s qualified first aider. He was appointed senior chaplain in 1996, but stepped down from the role last year.

Away from the cadets, Alan was a chartered librarian and formerly worked at Cambridge University Library until 2000, when he became the full-time rector of Upwell St Peter and St Clement’s, in Outwell.

He retired from the full-time ministry in 2012 and moved to Sutton.

Before ordination he served in the Royal Corps of Transport TA where he gained the Territorial Decoration and rose to the rank of major.

He said: “It has been a very rewarding ministry, and I have met some superb people. “The cadet motto is ‘To inspire to achieve’, and to see so many of our youngsters achieve something through the cadets, whether it be a Duke of Edinburgh award, a first aid certificate, a BTEC, sporting achievement, or simply how to be a better citizen is a wonderful thing.”

Anyone interested in joining the cadets should visit www.cambs acf.com or call 01223 862949.
