People in and around Mount Pleasant Road, Wisbech, are being urged to keep windows and doors closed following an ammonia leak from a local factory.
Emergency services are at Moy Park following the incident earlier today.
A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the accident response unit was in attendance along with four crews.
Fire fighters are on the scene wearing “gas type suits”.
A spokesman said: “We were called at 8.39am to reports of an ammonia leak on a site in the Mount Pleasant Road area in Wisbech.
“Specialist hazardous materials officers are en route to the scene. Fire fighters are currently exploring the area wearing gas type suits.”
The spokesman urged the public to stay away from the area for safety reasons.
On the Moy Park website the company outline their risk assessment and risk management strategies for dealing with on site hazards. Gas cylinders and fuel storage vessels are included in the policy but the firm has a number of materials in use that are classified as hazardous including ammonia gas.
The company’s stringent procedures include detailed risk analysis of the operations, advice on hazardous zoning requirements and a detailed action plan to improve controls across the site.
