PRIME Minister David Cameron was in Ely on Saturday and stopped off for a spot of breakfast at The Lunchbox, much to the surprise of staff and diners.

Flanked by six bodyguards, Mr Cameron took a seat at table 6 shortly after 9.30am and ordered an egg and bacon sandwich on brown bread. He chatted happily with staff before paying and leaving a £2.50 tip.

Mr Cameron then went for a stroll around the city’s popular farmer’s market before attending a confirmation service for his godchild at Ely Cathedral

Debbie Fenner, owner of The Lunchbox, in Market Street, said: “Ngari came in and told me the Prime Minster was sat at table six but I didn’t believe it. I thought it was a bit early for an April Fool’s joke!

“I went out to take a look and asked him if it was really him. He was very polite and charming and asked me how business was going, I was in complete shock.

“I knew my husband would never believe me if I told him so I made sure to get a photo.”

In light of the premier’s visit, Mrs Fenner said she was even considering changing her menu to accommodate ‘The Prime Minister’s Special’ the egg and bacon sandwich.
