National budget chainstore, Poundstretcher, could be coming to Chatteris to take up almost half the empty unit that was supposed to be Tesco.

The store is named in a document by retail property agent Morgan Williams that is advertising an A1 retail opportunity for the remaining space at the development just off the A141.

Poundstretcher shows as being “under offer” for an area spanning 21,326 square foot in a document by Morgan Williams online.

The remaining 26,574 sq foot is yet to be let and could be sub divided to meet requirements, the document says.

The setting has 321 parking spaces and planning permission for a petrol station.

The move has sparked excitement on local Facebook pages where people are speculating when the store might be opening and how many jobs it could create at the site that was mothballed two years ago.

Leicester-based family business, Crown Crest, supplies retailers and discount stores with products and are the owners of the Poundstretcher chain.

It began as a cash and carry business in the late 70s, which is where it made its mark, before moving into areas like wholesale and then Poundstretcher.

The new build supermarket was one of 49 projects called off by Tesco in response to a downturn in its financial fortunes.

It cost £22m and was supposed to create 250 jobs for Chatteris, but Tesco never completed its move and it has remained empty ever since.

• Retail Week magazine reported in March last year that Poundstretcher had plans to launch a new pound shop format with hopes to have up to 50 stores by the end of 2016.

The as-yet-unnamed chain, backed by owner Crown Crest, will sell a range of general merchandise goods and Poundstretcher was eyeing high street and retail park locations for more shops.

Sites more than 4,000 sq ft and up to 10,000 sq ft were being targeted nationwide, it said.
