Community projects across Cambridgeshire – including schemes in Fenland and East Cambs- were awarded nearly £1.4 million in the 12 months to March 2014 through the AmeyCespa Community Fund.
The AmeyCespa Community Fund, part of the Landfill Communities Fund, allows AmeyCespa to offset a proportion of its Landfill Tax liability by supporting projects which are located within ten miles of a landfill site, and which deliver community or environmental objectives.
Nearly 60 organisations were awarded funding between April 2013 and March 2014 for projects including the conservation of Burwell windmill; supporting electrical works for Huntingdon Gymnastics Club’s new hall; restoring Parson Drove village pond; providing a cricket ground for Reach; and creating or improving 12 play areas across the county.
The amount of support given in the year was unusually high as the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, which independently administers the fund, responded to the challenge set by HM Revenue and Customs to ensure year end fund balances were kept to a minimum.
Mark Shelton, AmeyCespa’s representative on the fund’s awards panel, said: “We are delighted to have helped so many fantastic projects through the fund.
“Being able to support the local community and create a positive impact is something that we truly believe in. It’s always great to see projects we have supported come to fruition.”
Jane Darlington, CEO of Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, said: “We have had a busy year and it is great that so many groups have worked with us to make sure the money that was available has been put to good use in the community.
“Although we have now allocated all the money from the fund, the next round of funding will be available by the autumn, so not-for-profit groups building or improving community facilities might like to see if they meet the criteria and then apply.”
