Ely's team of PCSOs say they are tackling problem parking.

Police in Ely say they are getting to grips with problem parking in the city, despite being inundated with complaints from residents.

PCSO Maria Robinson said that officers continued to get “complaints daily” about parking in the city but added that she wanted to “reassure residents” that the issue was being addressed by the community support team.

According to PCSO Robinson, officers handed out 42 tickets to vehicles owners in Ely during May – with a large number going to people who continued to park in the High Street on Saturday – when a 10am-4pm restriction was in place.

She said: “High Street is a pedestrian only zone between 10am and 4pm. There are 14 time plates in the road that that clearly outline the parking restriction.

“Officers will continue to monitor the location and any vehicle found to be committing an offence will have the appropriate action taken against them.”

The PCSO also said that incidents of cars being parked at the top of Fore Hill, thereby causing an obstruction, had descresed.

She added: “There has been an improvement concerning vehicles causing a unnecessary obstruction at the top of Fore Hill. My colleagues and I are still issuing fixed penalty notices weekly.

“I cannot stress enough why vehicles should not park here because by parking close to the junction near the bend, offending vehicles cause other road users to go onto the opposite side of the road while approaching that bend facing on coming traffic. “Clearly this is very dangerous and officers have witnessed near misses.”
