Ploughing match attracts entries from across East Anglia - and raises £300 for special care baby unit at Hinchingbrooke

A ploughing match held in Sutton Gault on Sunday helped raise £300 for a hospital’s special care baby unit.

Mum-of-four Claire Smith spent Christmas Day in Hinchingbrooke Hospital with her newborn twins Maisie May and Florence Grace and said she was overwhelmed by the generosity of staff, who provided presents and a Christmas lunch for families.

Inspired to give something back to the hospital, Claire and friends Allan Newman and Gary Brown decided to organise a ploughing match, which attracted 30 competitors from across East Anglia to Sutton Gault.

The field for the match was provided by Ely farmer PJ Lee and Sons.

After a rigorous period of judging, Brian Upchurch and his Massey Ferguson 35 were declared the winners.

Claire, whose twins are now six-months-old and thriving, said: “The money raised for the unit goes towards presents for the children and it provides food for the families. It is really generous of the unit but they can’t do it without the extra money that people donate.

“I am really thankful for the support we received as it is a cause im quite passionate about. It was something very simple but people were very generous.”
