Boots has applied to East Cambridgeshire District Council for planning permission to move into the former Starbucks outlet in High Street.

The national retailer is planning to transform the former coffee shop into an opticians and hearing care outlet.

According to its plans, Boots has applied to put up two fascia boards and two hanging “heritage” signs outside the shop, which also fronts on to Dolphin Lane.

Plans to expand the High Street entrance and install an exit on to Dolphin Lane are also included in the plans.

Agents acting for Boots said: “The existing unit is Grade II listed and in the conservation area of Ely.

“As a responsible retailer Boots understands the requirement to preserve the building and any alterations to the building must be suited to the building and its surroundings.”

Starbucks moved out of Ely back in September 2012, stating that it was not generating enough profit from the branch.

And the unit has remained empty for more than a year, despite rumours of interest from a number of restaurant chains.

A decision on the plans is expected within the next eight weeks. To view the plans, and to have a say, visit www.eastcambs.gov.uk
