The City of Ely welcomed its new mayor on Monday night as Cllr Elaine Griffin-Singh handed over the robes and chain of office to Cllr Lis Every.
Retired teacher Lis, of Barton Road, was welcomed into office at a special mayor-making ceremony attended by dozens of colleagues and dignitaries in Ely Cathedral’s Lady Chapel.
Lis has promised to make the theme of partnerships central to her 12 months as mayor.
She said: “The mayor making ceremony was a wonderful experience. I was so grateful that so many people came and I think we all had a good time.
“It is such a fantastic opportunity to pull people together from across Ely that we as a council know and work with.
“When I retired, the opportunity arose to give something back and once I got onto the city council I realised it was all about volunteers and working in partnership and that is something I wanted to be a part of.”
Lis said that she wanted to bring together all of the organisations with an interest in Ely and help promote working in partnership to help drive the city forward.
She added: “We have tended to work in isolation in the past and I think it is important that we pull together for the benefit of Ely.”
Among Cllr Every’s roles as mayor, she will be tasked with chairing meetings of the City of Ely Council and representing the city at civic events across the region.
