New lease of life proposed for disused village church

A disused church in Prickwillow could be converted into a family home under plans submitted to East Cambridgeshire District Council this week.
The Diocese of Ely has applied for permission to convert the disused St Peter’s Church, in Main Street, into a family home.
According to the diocese, St Peter’s was built in the 1860s and remained in use until 2012, when a dwindling congregation meant it had to be closed.
A spokesman for the diocese added: “Although it has been well maintained, it is beginning to show signs that it needs to be brought back into use, and residential usage has been accepted as the only feasible solution that would ensure its long term survival.
“This scheme gives the church a viable new use, extending its life, minimising the amount of alterations required and maximising the utilisation of the existing site, structure and features.”
The diocese said that the majority of the building will remain the same but that the vestry would be demolished and rebuilt to provide a new access point and windows.
A decision on the plans is expected within the next eight weeks. To view the plans, or to have a say, visit www.eastcambs.gov.uk
