A Sunday league football match was abandoned after it descended into a brawl.
Police were called to Clenchwarton at around 10.30am yesterday after reports of a disturbance during the King’s Lynn Sunday League Division 2 match between Clenchwarton Victory and Tilney Green Lions.
A Norfolk Police spokesman said: “We were called to a disturbance on a football pitch and upon our arrival no one wished to make any allegations.
“Inquiries are still ongoing and we have the names of those present so if anyone does make a formal complaint we will be able to take it from there.” Details of the brawl are scarce but Clenchwarton Victory’s club twitter feed confirmed the abandonment saying: “Clenchwarton v Tilney abandoned in the first half after a brawl broke out. Ref handled the situation excellently.”
No-one from the club wished to comment on the incident.
Tilney Green Lions assistant manager Tom Boxall did not attend the game but had spoken to a number of his players about the match.
“It is disappointing. It is a Sunday League game, why should you have to have the police there? Kids go to watch the football.”
League secretary David Thorn said that the league will investigate the incident and that it will be discussed at the league’s monthly meeting on Thursday.
