An Indian restaurant in Littleport has been voted in the House of Commons as one of the best in the country.

The restaurant was announced as runner-up in the prestigious Tiffin Cup 2014 given to the eatery that serves the best South Asian cuisine in the UK.

The prize is awarded every year by the Tiffin Club of MPs formed in 2006 with the aim of not only applauding the quality of South Asian food in Britain but also to raise money for charity. This year the cause is World Vision.

MP Steve Barclay went to the Indian Garden at Littleport, which he nominated on the recommendation of local councillor David Ambrose-Smith, to present owner Abu Shahid with his prize.

Mr Barclay said: “I am absolutely delighted that a restaurant in our area has picked up a runners-up prize in such a prestigious competition and I congratulate Abu and his eight members of staff on their success.”

Mr Barclay praised Mr Shahid for the quality of his food and for his work in supporting the community.

Mr Shahid, who has run the restaurant since 1997 and has a second restaurant in Papworth, was delighted to receive a chef’s jacket with the Tiffin Cup 2014 logo on it.

Indian Garden vied with other restaurants from the region to win a place in the Tiffin Cup 2014 and was chosen as runner-up in the grand final, which was held in the House of Commons.

The restaurant was subjected to a secret diner visit and was judged on the whole dining experience including its food, ambience and décor.
