A 14 year old schoolgirl has written a song to commemorate the First World War.

Ely College student Grace Mann, of Little Downham, penned the song to remember all those who have lost their lives in the line of duty in World War One and in battles since then.

Grace, who is about to go into Year 10, said she was inspired after hearing so much about the centenary celebrations this year.

She said: “I wanted to do something to remember the soldiers. I’ve always been interested in the first and second world wars. This is my way of remembering.” Her mum Karen said: “I realise it is difficult to get the rhythm of the words without the music but I think they are very moving by themselves.”

Far away on a field, lies the truth of it all

It’s seen boys turn to men,

It’s seen tears sweep the land

And I know that field will grow with sorrow and respect

And I know as season go, no one will forget

That our boys fought for us on that field across the sea

And on that where they stood, now the poppies grow

Far away on that field, holds the truth of it all

It saw boys run and fall

It saw the pain of it all

And I know that field will grow with forgiveness and love

And I know as time goes by, no one will forget

That our boys fought for us on that field across the sea

And on that field where they fell the poppies grow

On that field far away, God watches over it everyday

He lets us know that now our boys are safe up above

Where the sun shines.
