A dilapidated public telephone is set to be pulled down and taken away by BT.

The red phone box opposite Oliver Cromwell House, in St Mary’s Street, is in a poor state of repair and could be taken away by BT when a public consultation is complete.

The telecoms giant has given residents until September 16 to give their thoughts on the proposal. BT says the nearest alternative public phone is in Back Hill.

A spokesman said: “This kiosk has been damaged beyond repair in a theft attack, so it will be removed.

“We are consulting with the local authority on the permanent removal of a payphone from this site. If it is decided that a payphone is needed at this location, it will be replaced with a modern kiosk.

“If you have any comments about this, please contact the planning department at East Cambridgeshire District Council, quoting telephone number of this payphone: 01353 667342.”

Posting on ShapeYourPlace, Wendy Elliott called the phone box “dangerous”.

She said: “The tapes around the box are broken and the door is partly open. This is a very dangerous situation and needs immediate attention, before somebody gets injured.”

Write to BT with your thoughts at: 4th Floor Monument Telephone Exchange 11-13 Great Tower Street London EC3R 5AQ.
