Ely Country Park has been awarded a Green Flag – marking it out as one of the best in the UK.

The park is among a record-breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces that have received a prestigious Green Flag Award.

The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Ely Country Park has a children’s play area, sculptured walking routes and spectacular views of Ely Cathedral. There are also wildflower areas, woodland, riverside meadows and old gravel working pits.

Councillor Richard Hobbs, chairman of the commercial services committee, said “We’re delighted to have been awarded a Green Flag and it’s thanks to the enormous amount of hard work by our staff and valuable volunteers. I hope that we continue to see many families and children enjoying the park during the summer and beyond.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.”

Ely Wildspace liaises and works with East Cambridgeshire District Council to help develop and maintain the park, including litter picking, wildflower management and habitat surveys.
