A new plaque commemorating two celebrated Ely residents has been installed by volunteer group, City of Ely Perspective.

The plaque, similar to the iconic blue plaques erected by English Heritage, has taken up residence at the Poets House hotel, in St Mary’s Street, and celebrates Ely residents Sybil Marshall and Ewart Oakeshott, both of whom once lived in the building.

Sybil, who died in 2005, was a noted author and Ewart, who died in 2002, was a military historian.

The pale-coloured plaque was installed by the Perspective group with the help of former City of Ely mayor, Shirley Overall and her husband, Terry.

Together, they have helped install six plaques at locations around Ely, with a seventh due to be fixed at Ely’s railway station in the near future.

A spokesman for the City of Ely Perspective added: “More plaques will be fixed elsewhere to form a plaque trail with existing plaques and other signs around Ely and a leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre will then describe the trail.

“The City of Ely Perspective is very grateful for the willing cooperation of all the building owners.”
