A member of a Fenland history group has taken some spectacular photographs of March from the top of the town’s clock tower.

Darren Hankins, from the Facebook March, Cambs History Group, took shots of the town from 110ft in the air on Saturday.

The photography enthusiast also took shots of the inside of the clock tower at March Town Hall.

He said: “Trevor Richmand from Mallets winds the clock every week and he asked me if I would like to visit after I commented about going up the tower to take photos.

“I went to the very top, where a small trap door opens underneath the bell. Trevor said I could climb out and sit on the closed trapdoor, but when I got up there I decided to stay on the ladder as I wasn’t brave enough to clamber out.

“I was very lucky with the weather and am pleased with the photos.”

March Town Hall, which was completed in 1900, was designed by architect Mr W T Unwin and cost about £3,000 to build.

The clock tower was paid for by the people of March to mark the 60th year of the reign of Queen Victoria.

The clock was supplied by the Sainsbury brothers for £112 and the bell was taken from the old fire station, where it was used as a fire alarm as well as striking the hour.

It can go a whole week with just one winding and the variations in time-keeping are guaranteed not to exceed eight seconds per month.
