A colourful array of vegetables, fruit and crafts went on display for a show that is into its 87th year.

The event, which has been going strong since 1927, was reported to be another resounding success.

The City of Ely & District Horticultural Society presented the home grown event which organisers said had attracted a great turn out in good weather.

Show coordinator Gill Townson, one of a committee of five who help to stage the show, said: “It went very well with a good display of produce.

“Fruit was down because of the weather but craft entries were up and we had some very impressive items.”

There were giant vegetables and flowers from the stalwarts who have exhibited at the show for several years along with an exciting mixture of flowers, vegetables, cooking and handicrafts along with the ever popular children’s classes.

The Wesley Trophy for best in show went to Ken Howard for his wood turning.

The best horticultural entry went to onion growing specialist Charlie Stocker.

A big thanks was sent to those who came along to help set up the show and kept things running so smoothly and to those who donated food and prizes for the draw.

Thanks also went to show sponsors, the City Council, B J Jordan (Builders), Ian K Chivers (Plumbers), Millken Travel and St Peter’s Garage.

Mrs Townson said they were already planning the 88th show to decide the classes and show schedule.
