The duke stopped off at Ely Cathedral for a short service before being given a tour of the medieval building, in Palace Green, which underwent more than a year of careful restoration to bring it back to life as a part of King’s Ely.

He was then joined by King’s head teacher Sue Freestone to unveil a plaque commemorating the event.

The redevelopment included a new head teacher’s office, sixth form classrooms, dining room, gym and boarding facilities as well as a new girls’ boarding house.

The school acquired the lease for the building from Sue Ryder back in 2010, with the building used as a care facility by the charity.
